How to Take Azee 500mg 

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew it

Precautions and Warnings 

Cardiovascular Safety — QT Prolongation and Risk of Cardiovascular Death 

This is the single most important safety consideration for Azee 500mg that both competitor documents fail to adequately address. In March 2013, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication warning that Azithromycin “can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm.” This warning was based on a landmark retrospective study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Ray et al., 2012), which analysed 347,795 Azithromycin prescriptions and found 29 cardiovascular deaths — a significantly higher rate than the 42 deaths among 1,348,672 amoxicillin prescriptions or the 41 deaths among 1,391,180 patients taking no antibiotic. 

The risk was found to be substantially higher in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular risk factors. Notably, the risk of cardiovascular death with a comparator drug, levofloxacin, was not significantly different from Azithromycin — indicating this is a class consideration relevant to several antibiotics, not unique to Azithromycin alone. 

In an updated safety review (Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia, reflecting analysis through March 2024), regulators noted an approximately two-fold increased short-term risk of acute cardiovascular death in adults exposed to Azithromycin relative to other antibacterial drugs including amoxicillin. This risk was found to be greatest during the first 5 days of Azithromycin use.
